The season for Charlotte Purdue has gone really well and she pointed out her best performance
"I am now 18 but at 17 I ran 15.49.26 for 5000" (Watford 13th of June this year)
Training has gone well for her at St Marys and she points out ' I would like to move up to the longer distances like the marathon. I prefer the longer one's .I will do the half marathon first.'
Charlotte showed me her two attractive medals she obtained at the relay which she was very pleased with.
Stephanie Twell, who back in 2006 was a European cross country champion in the Junior race and was in the Olympics and, the World Championships this year
"How has this year gone for you?'
' Really pleased with it'
Coming from Junior to senior athletics was difficult?
'Not necessarily really difficult. I had already experienced senior competition. Tried to like, raise my game in some senior cross countries, like the Edinburgh Great Cross country event. I think that helped the transition to be a little bit smoother.'
'You have a good coach'
' Mick Woods is a wonderful coach'
'What are his strengths?'
' Many. I definitely think his attention to detail. As a coach he is fully Awatere of each individual's ability and what he sees in their abilities. Actually to inspire them, bringing that confidence out of them and just generally targeting what races are good for you and getting that block of training behind you. Pushing the boundaries really. Never being afraid of testing yourself.'
'Your club Aldershot must mean a lot to you as so many of the girls are running well!'
' Absolutely. I think everyone at the club breeds success really. When you see other people doing well it kind of gets the ball rolling. Setting the tone for the rest of the day really. We are all so excited with events like the six stage road relay. We look forward to it. It is great fun. Everyone trying to find out how the other one is doing. It was the fourth time at Sutton Coldfield and the girls got a course record. It made it quicker than the last two years so we have the three fastest times.
'How about your time of 14.00?
' I don't think it was my best but I did not do it last year. I have had a prolonged period off after the World Championships. I have had only four weeks back. Just getting back really.'
' Doing such high calibre things as the World Championships must be invaluable experience for the future for you?'
' Each of the major Championships are a terrific experience for the future. Each major Championship is a stepping stone to London 2012 and beyond really'
'What brought you into athletics originally?
'In my Primary schools I went to quite a few cross country clubs. My Dad Andy has had a strong influence.
He was in the Army so he has always been physically active. Seeing the trainers at the front door. Him coming back from his own runs with a sweaty tea shirt. A reinforcement really. He loves to go out and run each day himself, even though he calls one of his legs his Peg leg. It is a bit of sciatica he has got in it."
