It was the 76th Fraternity Cup cross-country race, organised by Barnet & District AC, and first started by Hampstead Harriers in 1931.
Australian Nowill, simply motored away from the local 'Star' James Trapmore, as they hit a dry patch on the muddy course. At that point in third place was 18 year old, Ben Nagy, and Henry Dodwell was in fourth position. Nowill, who currently works at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and trains at Parliament Hill fields, led Highgate's six scorers to a narrow two point victory over Shaftesbury Barnet with Enfield & Haringey third..
Nowill, 29, has had an impressive athletics career so far, having competed in an Olympics, a World Cup and the World cross country but his strong point is the 3000 steeplechase which he has run in 8:22.85 and been the Australian Champion for that event six times.
However, Nowill, had real problems with his first ever cross-country over muddy ground when he came 34th in the Gateshead Cross Challenge in November. "That was a disastrous run for me but in the Fraternity today I was using longer spikes so, it was just a case of finding my rhythm and when I did it worked out very well for me" He won in 25.24 with Nagy on 26.33 and Trapmore timed at 26.40.
Svenja Abel, despite recent injuries, ran in her usual elegant way to win the Sorority Cup for being the first woman in the mixed race
and Barnet & District won the team award.
The race before that was the 'Under 17 Boys' event in The North West London League and a 'Star' in the making Richard Goodman, led for most of the way. He will be sixteen on the 4th of April and added the win to his London CCC victory, plus being fifth in the 'National' at Alton Towers. Like the second placer 'An Improving' Jack Perry-Williams, also of Shaftesbury Barnet, are coached by Geoff Williams both lads are at St Albans School.
