Queens Park Harriers, Liddiard Trophy, cross race is one of the historic cross-country races held in the North London area, won a couple of times by Tony Simmons in the 1970's and, Mike Barratt of Ealing Southall & Middx has won it no less than a record eight times back in the 1950's to the 1970's. He was the Manager of the Ealing team that won the Liddiard Trophy on the 25th of October at KINGSBURY.
That was a surprise because Harrow had the first four runners home in the eight to score event.
The first home over the Kingsbury course was Dave Branfoot, a military administrative clerk at the Wellington Barracks. He believes in more cycling than running to protect the calf muscles from further injury.. He led the 21/2 lap race for most of the way but, the battle for minor places was more intense between Pete Norris, Julian Critchlow (47), Damien Nevins and Chris Beecham and was only concluded in the last mile, when they came back in that order out of the 104 finishers.
For the first time the ladies race had as many as three full teams finishing and Highgate Harriers were the narrow winners by one point over Serpentine. The race for first place was not concluded till the last 200m when Lisa Da Silva (TVH) went ahead of Emma Grant of Hillingdon. |
