Ranelagh Half Marathon
Richmond
James Lawler went away from the field after 2 miles reports Alastair Aitken
Lawler, who had 50.38/10 miles (2005) and 2:23:22/marathon (2003) on the books was having his last race, after a week of heavy mileage in preparation for the Edinburgh marathon.
In the hot conditions with the temperature soaring to 26c/80f Lawler started to feel it after only 4 miles covered.
"I was pleased to have the run on what would be a fast and good course but I felt absolutely awful with the mileage in my legs and the hot weather"
However, although Lawler felt he could get caught anytime it appeared unlikely that would happen.
Up to 81/2 miles behind Lawler was Graham Brook and Surrey Champion, Francis Staunton. Brook then eased ahead with Staunton doing a personal best by nearly a minute in third place. In fourth place was the first veteran David Freeman who only took up running five to six years ago.He finished just ahead of Paul Doyle who was the runner up in 2006.
Melissa Lyne was the first woman in 85.25. She had not raced for fourteen months and came to England three years ago after running 79/3.02 for half-marathon/marathon in Tuson Arizona.
Jane Laws, last year's W50 World Masters 5000m silver medallist was the second woman in 86:48. Laws found it hard work in the heat explaining "I won a 50 mile race which was knee deep in water or 20 miles in January so, I must now try and get my speed back for 1500/5000 on the track." She won those events in the British Masters Championships last year.
