SURREY VETERANS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The outstanding results came in the men's older age groups in the fourteenth annual event reports Alastair Aitken
Harry Tempan, who was 83 on the Tuesday beat all the M70'-75's when setting two Championships best performances in the 800 3.14/6:37.5. In fact those times beat the listed British M80 records as well.
In the 800 in strong winds he ran even paced, going through the first 400 in 1.37.
Two faster times that have not yet gone down as British M80 best performances were Tempan's 3:08.9/6:30.1. He achieved those at Kingston in the Vets AC Championships on 26th of August lat year and, they were the fastest times for M80 in the World last year.
Tempan won the 1984 European gold in the 1500 when he was 59 in Brighton and the following year won the M60 in the World Masters Championships.
The other outstanding performance at Kingsmeadow was by Steve Badgery, leading all the way, he set a new Surrey M60 CBP with 17:34.9 wiping off the previous best of 18:09.5. Badgery won Surrey titles as a boy, youth and then as an M40 and M50 veteran. He ran 2:15:44 in the Manchester marathon of 1971.
There was a hat-trick of CPB's in the high jump at Kingsmeadow. David Blunt (M50) 1.55, Roy White (60) 1.30 and Brian Harlick (M65) 1.25.
