In 2008 Highgate Harriers reinvented their Open Meetings at Parliament Hill track. Before that those popular events were last held in the 1970's. In April Highgate had their Spring meet and on Wednesday the 10th of September was the Autumn meeting. According to the organiser, established harrier Bob Slowe, the next one is likely to be held in the Spring 2009.
In the latest event which was also named as a City of London competition, there were 70 metre races for the Under 11's, 600's for the Under 13's, 400's and 800 races plus a 3000m race. Two field events were held which were the shot put and long jump. Surprisingly the majority of Highgate's distance 'Stars' which includes two internationals, were not present, which gave way to a local raid by Hillingdon AC who had the first three home in the 3000m. 19 year old Mathew Revier ran 9.03.4 and Martin Bateman 9.06.5 in second place with 17 year old Richard Mann third in 9.28.1 making a clean sweep for the club.
There were some even more notable performances with Highgate's sixteen year old Finbarr Ricketts, who ran a personal best 400 in 50.7 to win the 'A' race and was third in the 100 in 10.5 behind the winner Marimba Odundo-Mendez of Haringey & Enfield who recorded 11.3. Ricketts only took up athletics at Christmas time. Another sixteen year old Michael Wheeler of Herne Hill Harriers had a good shot series of 17.37, 18.12, 17.82 and 18.60.
Three Laing brothers were out competing for Highgate Harriers. Williams Laing (Under 17) ran 2:03.3 and his brother George Laing (Under 15) ran 55.2 for the 400 both personal best times..
The Laing's Grandfather Ted Fosbrook, who is over 80 now, was watching. Fosbrook, is a well known local dress designer and tailor and once a boxer in the Navy. He coached Roy Hollingsworth before he went to Loughborough and later became UK record holder in the discus and 1964 AAA's Champion. Fosbrook, who ran for Highgate, also coached several youths and juniors in the 1950's who obtained individual medals in the Middlesex Championships..
