Woodford and Newham & Essex Beagles both being in the first three in the last Premier League match, had a tough assignment fighting each other in the same draw but Newham & EB were overjoyed to having won in the women's match.
The predictions beforehand were accurate from the two team managers. Gladys Taylor, Woodford's overall team Manager " My team is not as strong as I would like it to be. A lot of our middle distance runners would be going to the Trafford Grand Prix. The meeting at Loughborough will take others who are going for fast times but I am using some youngsters. Having said that the one's I call my stalwarts are there Tim Abeyie (Won 100 in 10.79); Christian North (Won pole vault with 4.90); Simon Bennett (Won Javelin 59.50).I am hoping the youngsters on the track will gain as many points as possible and I am hoping for a good result to-day!"
Bob Smith, Newham's Manager, was more despondent " Not good for us basically. Two or three British league athletes and the rest of the Southern League team. It is going to be quite difficult for us to get through. The women's team has a better chance of getting through"
In the field in the first match Simon Bown had an impressive series of throws in the hammer 65.96/66.74/64.11/67.67/66.01/66.11. After Tim Abeyie won the 100 in 10.79 he pointed out "The season has been a good one for me except for the trials" (7th in the 200 in 21.8). He had run 20.57 in the last British League and ran a good race abroad in 20.6 last year. He recalls "I played football for Fulham as a youth then took up athletics in my first year in college in 2000"
Another one to be disappointed with the World trials was Henrietta Kodalinye-Sims (21) who won the 400 at Copthall by a wide margin. " When I was second in the heat in the trials it was not a good run for me so I only got into the' B' final that I won" Basildon's, Eighteen year old, Mathew Harrison had run a personal best in doing 47.89 coming third in the English schools and looked good winning his race in 48.37. Sol Daniels (22), who has only been sprinting for two years won his 200 in 22.65. He remarked "The wind was very strong in the back straight." One of the architects of Newham's success was Amina Ceesy-Jaitech who won her 100 convincingly in 12.04.
In match 2 Shaftesbury's Kris Robertson (20) won the 400m in 47.4I. He ran 47.08 as a 16 year old which was a AAA record but not done as fast since." I have run 45.4 on a relay split so I know the times will come in the right race"
Robertson put the icing on the cake for Shaftesbury by running home clear in the final event the medley relay.
From the non-premier league clubs one to impress was Stephanie Gaynor, a fine technician, she won the 100 hurdles unopposed in 14.21. She was 2nd in the English Schools the previous week in 14.07 " I am coached by my Dad Colin Gaynor who was a sprinter and advised by some hurdlers."
